Considerations of a term and its public use
By Chris Cutler
(September 2006)
INTROThis essay was commissioned for a book dedicated to Prof. Gunther Mayer on his 70th birthday. A highly respected academic, musicologist and a supporter of avant garde and adventurous music, Gunther always trod a quietly dissonant path through the political complexities of the old German Democratic Republic. I should add that my take on these matters is not one he would easily endorse, though I know he appreciates the central argument which, like his own thinking moves obliquely against the orthodoxies of current scholarship.
Preface
In hot pursuit of the Roadrunner, Wile E. Coyote runs straight over the edge of a precipice. He's so fixated on his forward goal that he fails to notice there is no longer any ground underneath his feet. Twenty metres out, he makes the fatal error of looking down and gravity takes care of the rest. In this essay, I want to suggest that something very loosely analogo...

(From unfiled: Music Under New Technology, ReR / Recommended Sourcebook 0402)
The following chronological list of recordings hints at the vast range of material included within the realms of "'anti" and "conceptual" music. The list emphasizes achievements of the last few years. It would be difficult to define this odd category of music, because the artists' motivations and intentions and the results of their labors are extremely diverse. However, the records in this category have one common bond - they are all self-referential. Shifting emphasis away from the music, they point to their own existence as cultural artifacts and objects to be consumed These recordings transcend the sound contained within their packaging (often there is no sound at all) to question "'extra-musical" elements such as music industry practice, the notion of "quality "I the role of the music critic, the role of the listener, etc.
They expand our perception of the phenomenon of music, addre...

ARTHUR MAGAZINE - WE FOUND THE OTHERS
“Arthur is free, colorful, patchouli-scented but whip-smart, unapologetically political, sometimes silly, often anarchist and always willing to listen to voices way, way outside the mainstream. Above all, it is prophetic, usually about two years ahead of the rest of the country in its loves and obsessions.” — The Village Voice, 2007
Pax Recordings was founded in 1997, by Northern Californians Jennifer Jones and composer/guitarist Ernesto Diaz-Infante, with the ambition to explore the boundaries of music. Pax Recordings was initially based in Pacific Grove (Monterey Bay Area) and relocated to San Francisco in 2000. Pax Recordings aesthetic is a wide range of modern music, including: experimental, improvised, noise, electronic, free jazz, 21st century composition, and avant rock, with an emphasis on improvisation and unclassifiable
Frank Moore (born Frank James Moore, June 25, 1946) is an American performance artist, poet, essayist, painter, musician and Internet/television personality who has experimented in art, performance, and ritual since the late 1960s. He was an independent candidate for President of the United States in the 2008 election.
Moore is perhaps most well known as one of the NEA-funded artists targeted by Jesse Helms and the GAO (Government Accountability Office) in the early '90s for doing art that was labeled “obscene.” He is well known for long (5-48 hours) ritualistic performances with audience participation, nudity, and eroticism. But he has also become well known for his influential writings on performance, art, life, and cultural subversion; for his historical influence on the San Francisco Bay Area music and performance scene; and more recently for his 24/7/365 webstation, LUVeR(Love Underground Visionary Revolution).
He was born with cerebral palsy and is unable to walk or talk, b...
RE/Search grew out of Search & Destroy, which Jello Biafra, Dead Kennedys founder, called “the best punk rock publication, ever. It combined art and photography with in-depth interviews and articles.” Every RE/Search book continues the Punk Rock Cultural Revolution, but strives to provide permanent inspiration to artists/cultural scientists of the future, providing careful editing, reference sections, photos, art and anthropological history. Our books are printed in tiny quantities, are uncompromising in content (unlike books from a corporate publisher) — each one is a rare, limited- edition work of art. Look at our catalog — many books you see today will not be here tomorrow, so get them while you
L.A. RECORD is an independent music magazine originally published weekly as a broadsheet poster. The poster usually depicts a local Los Angeles musicians and according to the magazine editors is meant to recreate an iconic album cover. In March 2008, it began publishing as a monthly magazine with a poster inside. The magazine is available to the public free of charge at local community spots in Southern
Hollow Earth Radio is a community-run online radio station that presents a forum for music, sounds and perspectives commonly under-represented by the media. We support the local music community in the Pacific Northwest by exposing works that have yet to be unearthed or have long been dormant. We acknowledge and celebrate raw talent (i.e. bedroom recordings) and imperfections. We talk to the musicians, reveal the stories behind the artists, and learn about the actual people involved. We highlight human experience with an emphasis on found sound and field recordings within American Culture. We encourage community participation in adding to our archives. As a nonprofit radio station, we offer the local community access to training and knowledge on how to run an online radio
"Music scene” is another word for “music community”, and every young person is a participant in some music community somewhere.
Just like a religious community or a literary community or any community, music communities have within them the potential to create change. Unlike other communities, music communities are exceptional at reaching young people, because they are essentially created by young people.
AMP organizations work hand-in-hand with these music scenes. In some instances, we are the music scenes. Because of this, we are usually the first to open doors for young people to get involved and build skills for the future. The effects of our work reverberate beyond the volume of our stereos.
Sometimes we like to say that we use culture (music and art) as a vehicle for community change and that we use community organizing as a vehicle for cultural change. woot woot.
The IPRC is one of the only nonprofit self-publishing centers of its kind anywhere in the world. We offer access to workspace and tools to aid in the production and distribution of zines, comics, hand-bound books and artwork. This includes computer workstations for writing, scanning, graphic design & desktop publishing, and high-speed internet access for research and networking purposes; two copiers, five table-top letterpresses, three Gocco printers, a YuDu screenprinter, and various other tools for creating, binding, and assembling publications. We also have two art galleries and one of the nation’s largest circulating zine
UbuWeb is a completely independent resource dedicated to all strains of the avant-garde, ethnopoetics, and outsider arts.
Contributions are invited for a proposed collection of essays exploring the soundscapes of Europe from c.1500 to 1945. The collection seeks to open up new areas of interdisciplinary scholarship from a range of fields including (but not limited to) musicology, urban geography, history, literary studies, cultural studies, psychoanalysis, psychology and anthropology, and will build on existing work in acoustic ecology, the sociology of noise and histories and historiographies of noise, audition and aurality. We will favour contributions that deal with historically-informed topics in the following areas (although this is by no means an exclusive list):
. The noise-sound-music nexus
. Urban/rural soundscapes
. Public/private soundscapes
. The acoustic ecology of communities
. Legal histories of noise
. Noise, music and the body
. Listening...

(This is a transcript of a lecture presented at the Keys National Piano Competition,Brisbane Convention Centre, Australia, 17 October, 2004)
1. Introduction
I'm going to be discussing improvisation and the various ways it can be approached. Some improvisational techniques will be briefly explored from the point of ideas and thoughts about how we can organise music.
This breakdown of a current understanding of improvisation will either be very obvious to someone sitting in a seat here, or it may be something completely foreign to someone accustomed to systematised ways of learning music. Essentially, we're talking about creating music within the limits of sound rather than limits of different ways we write down and understand musical structures and systems of thought in playing someone else's composition.
Though an overview of improvisational techniques, it will be no different to an overview of compositional techniques, as at the level of...

"Full with Noise,..." is about noise music, specifically the version that has come to be called Japanese Noise -- itself composed of many different strands. The first half deals with the question of noise. What is it, whose is it, and how can we think about it. Also, how does noise inflect our thinking, rather than being an object; at what point does noise lose its noiseness and become meaning, music, signification? Or -- is there even a point where noise can subsist? Mostly, the text below takes the view that noise is a function of not-noise, itself a function of not being noise. Noise is no more original than music or meaning, and yet its position is to indicate the banished, overcome primordiality, and cannot lose this 'meaning'. Noise, then, is neither the outside of language nor music, nor is it simply categorisable, at some point or other, as belonging exclusiv...
By Alejandra Salinas, Aeron Bergman and Klaus Oldanberg.
We were in a pub in Glasgow having a few pints. Alejandra brought up how frustrating it is that there are so few women making sounds compared to women making visual art. Since we feel the visual and audio arts are virtually one and the some, this seems puzzling. While some think that electronic music eliminated the figure of the artist, therefore eliminating any gender problematic, Klaus thinks the lack of women in electronic music is a big problem that needs some discussion. We hope to open up a dialogue here.
If anyone would like to comment upon any of these points please write to: underwoodwork@yahoo.com -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
